WORKFLOW MONITORING, STRATEGY & DESIGN.
INTERIOR DESIGN. PROJECT MANAGEMENT. CONSTRUCTION.
As one of Australia’s premier health precincts with a 24-bed capacity (and plans for expansion) Linear Clinical is a stage 1 clinical trials facility that’s completed over 145 first in-human trials using 20,000+ volunteers. They needed a turn-key solution including site selection, property analysis, interior design, and construction. Linear Clinical’s vision was to establish a world-class clinical trials centre to attract trial participants and industry collaborators. To achieve this, they requested a design that steers clear of traditional, clinical design and resembles something closer to the comfort of a hotel environment.
Our multidisciplinary team was actively engaged in site selection and property analysis. Thanks to our thorough analysis of patient and staff workflows – including placing tracking devices on staff and patients in their existing facility – we developed a clear understanding of the ideal size, layout, and location for the new site. This helped us avoid potential hidden costs associated with upgrading the chosen site to meet relevant health standards.
We worked closely with furnishing suppliers, medical equipment manufacturers, and potential clients to create the final look. Our patient-centric design approach ensured a welcoming, comfortable environment for participants. We designed waiting areas and exam rooms with soothing colours, comfortable seating, and ample natural light while accounting for patient privacy to ensure participants feel respected and secure during their visits. The result? A unique, inviting space that blends comfort with cutting-edge science.
The process of transforming the new site (an old gymnasium) into a class 9a facility saw our team successfully navigate a strict planning and approvals process with the WA health board. We integrated safety and compliance considerations into every aspect of the facility’s design, including appropriate ventilation systems and containment measures to prevent the spread of contaminants and ensure the safety of researchers and participants.
We carefully planned the layout of workspaces to minimise the need for researchers to travel long distances between different areas. Ensuring the facility had a flexible layout that could adapt to the changing needs of different research projects was also key. We included modular spaces that can easily be reconfigured for lab work, patient consultations, and admin. And their new laboratory spaces are well-equipped with biological safety cabinets, microscopes, centrifuges, and refrigerators/freezers for sample storage.
We successfully navigated a rigorous approval process to deliver a world leading clinical research facility two weeks ahead of schedule. Contrary to what’s possible through traditional design and construction methods, our diligent and persistent team designed a space that positions Linear Clinical Research as a global frontrunner in their field, making waves in the biotech industry.
